An airman died at an undisclosed location Thursday while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, according to the Department of Defense.

Staff Sgt. Tristen Wright, 28, of Palm Bay, Fla., was involved in a non-combat related incident that’s under investigation, the department announced in a Saturday news release.

He was assigned to the 27th Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S. military’s name for the international fight against the Islamic State.

The squadron’s commander remembered Wright as “a force for good.”

“He was the kind of supervisor who took the privilege of leading and mentoring Airmen seriously,” Maj. Brent Escay said in a subsequent Air Force news release out of Cannon. “He cared deeply for the Airmen in his flight and volunteered actively within the local community. We’ll never forget how his infectious smile could light up a room.”

Wright enlisted on Aug. 23, 2016, and had been assigned to the squadron as a materiel management specialist since 2019, according to the Air Force. He served in a similar role at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, between 2017 and 2019.

The commander of the 27th Special Operations Wing, Col. Robert Johnston, said Wright had a “positive impact across the entire Cannon family and local community.”

“These are our most difficult days … we are committed to taking care of Tristen’s family and teammates affected by this tragedy,” Johnston said in the Air Force release. “His family and friends remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

Wright’s decorations include a U.S. Air and Space Force Commendation Medal, a U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters and “C” devices, an Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one oak leaf cluster, a Global War on Terrorism Medal and a National Defense Service Medal, according to the Air Force.
