TOKYO — Japanese police have yet to identify a pair of badly burned victims two days after a car collided with a roadside garage in northeastern Japan, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
The two were killed, and another person was injured, when the car rammed into the structure shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday near Misawa Air Base, home of the 35th Fighter Wing.
However, a wing spokesman confirmed Monday that an airman had died in the crash and that the name would be released after next of kin has been notified.
“While the investigation into the accident is still ongoing, any loss of life here at Misawa Air Base is a tragedy,” wrote Capt. Leeroy Stark. “We are working closely with our off-base community partners to recover from this heart-rending crash.”
The garage burned following the crash, a Japanese police spokesman in Misawa told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday.
The crash victims were too badly burned to immediately identify, he said. One body was recovered from inside the car, the other was found outside the car.
A surviving passenger, Yuta Onoue, 20, was treated at a local hospital for a broken leg and burns to his back, the spokesman said.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and attempting to identify the victims, he said.
