TOKYO — Two people, including a U.S. airman, died and a third person was injured in a fiery car crash over the weekend near Misawa Air Base in northeastern Japan.

The 35th Fighter Wing at Misawa confirmed that an airman died as a result of the crash around 4:40 a.m. Sunday. The wing did not identify the deceased pending notification of next of kin, according to an email Monday to Stars and Stripes.

“While the investigation into the accident is still ongoing, any loss of life here at Misawa Air Base is a tragedy,” said wing spokesman Capt. LeeRoy Stark. “We are working closely with our off-base community partners to recover from this heart-rending crash.”

The car crashed into a garage at a home in Misawa city, the Too Nippo website reported Sunday. The crash started a fire that burned down the garage.

An ambulance took the car’s injured occupant to a local hospital, according to the wing.

The Misawa Police Department was investigating the cause of the accident, according to Too Nippo’s report.

“The situation is currently under investigation and more information will be provided when it becomes available,” the wing said.
