An F-16 Fighting Falcon jettisoned two fuel tanks during an in-flight emergency this week at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.
The jet, assigned to Eielson’s 18th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, was taking off around 1:47 p.m. Tuesday when the emergency occurred, the base said in a statement posted to social media the following day.
“The aircraft landed back at Eielson safely with no injuries reported,” said the statement, which added that the tanks were dropped in accordance with emergency procedures.
No further details were released about the emergency, which the base said remains under investigation.
The squadron had been known as the 18th Aggressor Squadron until a name-change ceremony at Eielson in Februrary.
The fighter’s fuel tanks — dropped in an uninhabited area near the base — have been found, the Air Force said.
“To facilitate clean-up operations in the area, spectators are requested to stay away from the scene of the spill,” the statement said. “The base command post, local emergency services, law enforcement, and environmental protection agencies have been notified.”
The commander of Eielson’s 354th Fighter Wing, Col. Paul Townsend, said his team is working closely with local government and community members to respond quickly and responsibly.
“We are grateful for the community’s support of our mission, and we strive to be good stewards of the land we fly over,” he said in the statement.
