Army veteran admits to 1982 killing of California kindergartner

Robert John Lanoue, 72, who pleaded guilty this week, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for the 1982 rape and murder of a five-year-old. The girl’s body was accidentally discovered by military police at Fort Ord (closed in 1994) who were investigating something else. There were no suspects for decades.

Veteran, employee at Robins AFB sues after service dog request was denied

Bradley Clay, a former airman and technician at Robins Air Force Base, claims in his lawsuit against the secretary of the Air Force that he was discriminated against for his disabilities. He suffers from PTSD, anxiety and depression. Some superiors worried about liabilities if the service dog was exposed to chemicals or other unsafe conditions.

Trump administration orders Pentagon to plan for sweeping budget cuts

The Pentagon budget for 2025 is about $850 billion, with broad consensus on Capitol Hill that extensive spending is necessary to deter threats posed by China and Russia, in particular. If adopted in full, the proposed cuts would include tens of billions of dollars in each of the next five years.

VA fires more than 1,000 new workers

The Department of Veterans Affairs fired more than 1,000 newly hired, or probationary, employees. The department says the move will save close to $100 million and that there are more than 43,000 probationary employees who continue to work and will not be terminated.
