The leader of Haiti’s transitional presidential council tried to allay surging alarm among Haitians over rampant gang violence by acknowledging Thursday that the country has “become hell for everyone” and promising new measures to stop the bloodshed.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is in Greenland for a three-day trip aimed at building trust and cooperation with Greenlandic officials at a time when the Trump administration is seeking control of the vast Arctic territory.

NATO plans to ask European allies and Canada to increase their stocks of weaponry and equipment by about 30% in the next few years, according to an alliance official. This would require a massive financial effort from most European allies and Canada, while U.S. outlays wouldn’t need to change.

The USS Gravely has deployed to the Gulf of America on a mission usually reserved for the U.S. Coast Guard to help deter illegal crossings and drug trafficking as part the military’s efforts to bolster security along the southern border.

The vessel is commonly used in overseas missions. The Coast Guard typically takes a lead role in security missions at sea close to the United States.

The display of unity in a remote Canadian tourist town papered over Trump’s dismissiveness of Canada as an independent country, and his threat to impose 200 percent tariffs on European wine and liquor as the two-day meeting carried on between the U.S. and its traditionally closest allies.

The Nicolás Maduro regime has agreed to resume flights transporting Venezuelans deported from the United States back to their home country, U.S. diplomat Richard Grenell said.
