HEIDELBERG, Germany — Nearly 1,000 people will be competing Sunday in a German triathlon in Heidelberg.

The event, with athletes running up and down the Philosopher’s Walk, cycling around a hill and swimming in the Nekar River, might be fun to watch.

But getting there could be tough: the race will affect traffic and parking, officials said.

Several streets in downtown Heidelberg, on the Neuenheim River bank and along the Königstuhl hillsides, will be closed between 9:30 a.m. and noon. Parking will also be reduced on streets, and two parking garages in the old town, at Kornmarkt (P 13) and Schloss (P 12), will be closed during the race.

The “Heidelbergman” will begin about 9:30 a.m. with a swim starting near Neckarmünzplatz square and ending at the river bank near the Theodor Heuss bridge.

Next, athletes will cycle two laps around the Königstuhl hill, before tackling the final 10 km run up Philosopher’s walk and back.

Officials recommend that drivers allow extra travel time when bound for or through downtown Heidelberg, or that they seek alternate routes. For a detailed listing of affected streets or more information, including a map of the course, visit www.heidelbergman.de.”
