OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — Morin Gate reopened to motorists Friday morning after completion of a repaving project.

Officials closed the gate — formerly named Beta Gate — March 15 as part of a $235,000 project to repave a three-block section of Beta Gate Road, which goes from the gate to the base’s Perimeter Road.

It will be open 24 hours a day to general traffic but is also the only gate through which local contractors and other commercial motorists may enter the base, said base spokesman Tech. Sgt. Matthew Summers.

With the gate again open, officials have closed Doolittle Gate. It’s normally closed year-round but was opened while the repaving project was under way.

Morin Gate was named in memory of Cpl. Joseph R. Morin, the first Air Police member killed in action after the 1947 inception of the U.S. Air Force.

Morin died Nov. 1, 1950, in a land-mine explosion about one hour southwest of Daegu during the Korean War.
