The redevelopment of Kaiserslautern’s new city center is nearing its final phase, with work on Burgstrasse scheduled to commence on July 15, officials said in a statement.

This follows the completion of the specialized embossed asphalt installation on Fruchthallstrasse. The unique asphalt requires precise conditions to set, and construction had to be delayed due to weather, said site manager Jörg Riedinger in a statement.

The light-colored asphalt, a special mixture for the city of Kaiserslautern, now covers the area south of Fruchthalle, reflecting less sunlight and heat, according to city managers.

By the project’s end in 2025, the Burgstrasse area, including the Martin-Luther-Strasse and Spittelstrasse junction, will see revamped roads, new utilities, LED lighting and enhanced green spaces.

“In total, when everything is finished, a total area of around (4 acres) between K in Lautern mall and Saks Hotel will have been redesigned since 2022, when it started at the torch fountain, at a total cost of around 10 million euros,” said Sebastian Staab, the head of the city’s civil engineering department.
