Fukuoka, Japan, Oct. 23, 1960: Miss Itazuke Airbase, Kenniekay McDaniel (center), Cecile Schneringer (left) and Pat Bomar wave to the crowds during the Hakata Okunchi Festival parade. The three American high school students and the Itazuke airbase High School Band were entries in the Hakata Okunchi parades Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23, 1960. The two-day festival dates back to feudal days and gives thanks to the gods for Autumn’s harvest, with the parades starting at the Kushida Shrine, dedicated to Hakata's Shinto deities Ohata Omikami (Kushida Omikami), Amaterasu Omikami , and Susanoo Omikami (Gion Omikami). Ms. McDaniel, stepdaughter of M/Sgt. and Mrs. Frank Clark won the coveted crown in the July 4th contest; Ms. Schneringer, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Lester E. Kitzingen, Germany, Jan. 13, 1948: Lt. Gen. Clarence R. Huebner (center) inspects the honor guard commanded by 1/Lt. Roscoe Cartwright at the Kitzingen Basic Training Center for Negro troops. The deputy EUCOM commander toured the extensive former air base with 20 generals and staff officers. At the time of Huebner's visit, the U.S. Armed Forces were still segregated. President Harry Truman’s executive order 9981 abolishing discrimination in the armed services “on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin,” which led to the end of segregation in the services, was issued July 26, 1948. During his visit, Lt. Gen. Huebner noted: "There are 14,000,000 Negroes in the U.S.," Huebner stated. "If the Nation is to utilize this manpower in the Army, we must develop its leadership potential." Washington, D.C., Nov. 11, 2009: A visitor to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., looks at wreaths placed during a Veterans Day ceremony on a rainy Wednesday. Each of the stars in the background represents 100 American servicemembers killed during World War II. November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day - the day all fighting ended on the fronts of WWI - with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The day was declared an official federal holiday in 1938 and was initially known as a day set aside to honor WWI veterans. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day by Congress at the urging of a number of veterans service organizations, to become a day to honor the veterans of all wars.
