Over Afghanistan, Jan. 6, 2015: Afghan National Army soldiers rest in the back of an Mi-17 helicopter after being evacuated from a remote outpost in southern Afghanistan. As coalition air support has dwindled to almost nothing, the few Afghan Air Force helicopters are in high demand. On Jan.1, 2015 the NATO-led coalition transitioned to a mission focused more on advising and training than combat operations, but for hundreds of thousands of Afghan security forces and their remaining foreign advisers, the fighting is far from over. While embedded with the Afghan soldiers and air crews continuing that fight across what was once the Taliban heartland, Stars and Stripes gained an exclusive look at what the war looks like after the withdrawal of most international forces. Manas, Kyrgyzstan, Dec. 6, 2013: A rancher watches over a herd of sheep in a field just outside the U.S. Air Force's transit center in Manas, Kyrgyzstan. Locals fear loss of jobs when the U.S. Air Force shuts down operations of its center in 2014. The center - in operation since 2001 - employs some 700 locals, but as reporter Josh Smith found, sentiments in the rest of the country were less mournsome. Children - donned in their best Halloween costumes - are eager to pet "Clarence the Camel," the mascot of the pilots of the 86th Fighter Group and donate some of their candy to the children of Berlin, so that Clarence can ferry them to the blockaded city on his own C47 Operation Vittles flight. The camel was bought in August 1948 in Libya by Lt. Donald Butterfield - seen here with Clarence. Clarence soon became a mascot for Operation Vittles - also known as the Berlin Airlift - as people would deposit gifts and candy for the Berlin children in the camel's saddlebags during football games on the 86th Neubiberg Air Base, as well as other events across West German U.S. bases.

Grafenwoehr, Germany, Aug. 28, 1947: Staff Sgt John L. Bell, L Company, 18th Infantry Division cleans his pistol after shooting. SSgt. Bell participated in the pistol matches at the Infantry Training Center at Grafenwoehr. Soc Trang, South Vietnam, May 9, 1962: Army Maj. Robert M. Campbell (center) sector advisor for Vietnamese troops operating in the Vinh Long Province, confers with two Vietnamese officers after Marine Helicopter Squadron 362 - aka "Archie's Angels" - ferried them into the Mekong Delta area. The Marine squadron was named after its commander, Lt. Col. Archie J. Clap and is one of four U.S. helicopter units serving a mobility mission for Vietnamese troops. Pictured here is a scan of the original 1962 print created by Stars and Stripes Pacific's photo department to run in the print newspaper. The red marks indicate the crop lines. Only the middle part of the image would appear in the newspaper. As the vast majority of pre-1964 Stars and Stripes Pacific negatives and slides were unwittingly destroyed by poor temporary storage in 1963, the prints developed from the late 1940s through 1963 are the only images left of Stripes' news photography from those decades – with the exception the negatives of some 190 pre-1964 photo assignment found recently. Seoul, South Korea, September 1959: Children carefully paint the features on puppets in one of the classroom of the Seoul Children's home. The girls live at the orphanage together with some 250 other war orphans. The home -- originally named Munske Orphanage and founded by Col. Charles A. Munske in July 1951 -- was set up with the aid of United States and United Nations servicemen for children often found wandering the battle fields. In 1952 the orphanage was nationalized under the Ministry of Health and Social Services and renamed. In 1955 the home was moved to its current location and the children were housed in tents until the new buildings were completed in August 1957. Pictured here is a scan of the original 1959 print created by Stars and Stripes Pacific's photo department to run in the print newspaper. The red marks indicate the crop lines. Stars and Stripes' Pacific archives house many images of South Korean children affected by the Korean War. Many are of orphans living in homes founded and/or funded by either U.S. servicemembers or the United Nations. Also found in our archives are images of so-called "Unit Mascots," children orphaned by the war who were "adopted" by U.S. military units. The children would live on base or in camp with the unit and were often outfitted in smaller versions of the unit's uniform. Some ended up being legally adopted by a servicemember and went on to live in America. Some of these images of "unit mascots"
