After order to leave South Philly, SS United States’ options include being sunk or sold for scrap

An SOS is ringing out from the SS United States in South Philadelphia, which needs to find a new home by September. And if its stewards don’t find a new berth for the vessel, the “Queen of the Seas” may ultimately head to the scrap pile.

Detroit council frustrated by lack of progress on armory renovation, prime real estate

The Parade Co., which puts on Detroit’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade, submitted a plan in August 2021 to buy land that contains the historic Brodhead Naval Armory, a legacy of the Navy and Marine Corps in the city that will serve as the Parade Co.’s new headquarters.

The line is long to receive medical attention at the Israeli Defense Force hospital inside the Brazda Refugee Camp, April 16, 1999. The medical facility consists of tents and have treated approximately 1,200 patients so far.

Medical personnel treating refugees living in the camps here say the general health of those arriving from Kosovo is good. However, some who have worked in similar humanitarian missions anticipate a rise in emotional problems stemming from the uncertainty refugees feel toward their future.

Ste. Mère-Église, France, June 7, 1961: The children of Ste. Mère-Église, Normandy, lead a parade marking the 17th anniversary of the town's liberation by Allied forces during the World War II D-Day invasion. Among the guests at the celebration were Ambassador to France James M. Gavin, who commanded the 82nd Airborne Division on D-Day, and several members of the 505th Infantry, which (as the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment) took the town from the Germans. The conservancy that oversees the SS United States has launched an urgent $500,000 fundraising campaign to help cover relocation expenses for the historic ship amid its uncertain future.
