Nui Ba Den, Vietnam, Oct. 14, 1969: Soldiers atop Black Virgin Mountain (Nui Ba Den) cover their ears as they fire off a mortar at Viet Cong positions lower down the mountain. The mountain - a solitary block of granite that juts 3,200 feet in the air above Tay Ninh - its summit in the clouds. Multi-service forces have been holding the top of the mountain ever since Special Forces assaulted the mountain in May 1964, pushing the Viet Cong off of its peak and establishing a camp at 3,200 feet. The camp commander estimates that today [October 1969] there are some 1,500 VC underneath the craggy hill in caves that open in crags and crevices in the brush and black granite on the mountain’s side. FCs George Rosenblatt and Leo Kuehnen take a photograph of a Japanese woman holding up her parasol. Touring Tokyo with his camera, Pacific Stars and Stripes - Korea bureau photographer James Vestal captured on film the impressions of the city that servicemen on Rest & Recuperation leave get. Vestal’s photographs show the visiting servicemen’s fleeting glimpses of the world’s largest city. Vestal joined other visiting staffs from Korea, photographing them as they covered the city. Pictured here is a scan of the original 1960 print created by Stars and Stripes Pacific’s photo department to run in the print newspaper. The red marks indicate the crop lines. Only the middle part of the image would appear in the newspaper. As all pre-1964 Stars and Stripes Pacific negatives and slides were unwittingly destroyed by poor temporary storage in 1963, the prints developed from the late 1940s through 1963 are the only images left of Stripes’ news photography from those decades. Picauville, France, June 5, 2014: Balloons carrying the names of U.S. soldiers who died during the D-Day invasion were released at a 70th anniversary D-Day commemoration at the Ninth Air Force Memorial at Picauville, France, June 5, 2014. "The clouds broke over the Channel, and suddenly there were more ships than you could see, with the white wakes of them streaming back to the English coast and the dark green of the Channel flat before them to the coast of Europe," wrote Stars and Stripes' Bud Hutton, who witnessed D-Day from a Ninth Air Force B-26 Marauder plane. Landing Zone Mack, South Vietnam, Oct. 9, 1966: A Marine hit on head and back by grenade shrapnel receives medical attention from Navy corpsman, about 50 yards from the top of Hill 484, also known as LZ Mack. Hill 484 was the scene of heavy fighting between the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces during Operation Prairie in early October 1966.
