DAYTON, Ohio (Tribune News Service) — A tornado with winds around 100 mph touched down early Wednesday morning near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, damaging a hangar and several planes undergoing restoration.

A news release from the base says the hangar and several other buildings in Area B were damaged. Some planes that were in the process of being restored were damaged by flying debris. There were no reports of injuries.

It was one of five confirmed tornadoes that touched down in Ohio early Wednesday as a strong weather system moved through the Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

“Our initial assessment from this morning’s storm is the damage is isolated to the southern side of Area B. Our initial focus right now is on safety and damage assessment,” Col. Travis Pond, 88th Air Base Wing and installation commander, said in a statement. “I can’t speak highly enough about our security forces, Fire Department and civil engineer Airmen for their quick response and hard work to assess damage and determine a path forward for restoring operations as quickly as possible.”

The Weather Service says the EF-1 tornado touched down around 4:37 a.m. and was on the ground for four minutes, covering nearly 2½ miles.

Two other EF-1 tornadoes also were confirmed Wednesday, one in Madison County and the other in Franklin County. There also were two EF-2 tornadoes, in Clark/Madison counties and Franklin/Licking counties. Both had maximum wind speeds of 120 mph.

In Clark and Madison counties, the tornado damaged several homes, tearing the roofs off of several, and also destroyed barns and other structures, the Weather Service says. At one point the tornado had a width of 500 yards.

The tornado in Franklin and Licking counties also damaged homes and tore up several trees by the roots. No injuries were reported from either EF-2 tornado.
